About Our Organization
COLUMBUS HOUSE MISSION:
“To serve people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless by providing shelter and housing and by fostering their personal growth and independence.”
COLUMBUS HOUSE PROGRAMS:
Columbus House, a 501c3, not-for-profit charitable organization, offers a broad array of programs and services for people who are experiencing homelessness in the Greater New Haven region and beyond. Each year, Columbus House is able to help thousands of chronically homeless adults break the cycle through comprehensive case management services. We help our clients obtain mental health treatment; provide life skills counseling; guide them to vocational services; help them stay focused on and overcome their addictions and our ultimate goal is to help secure housing. Our success is attributable to a dedicated and compassionate staff of over 90 people, all of whom are credentialed and certified as necessary. (Some are formerly homeless themselves.)
Columbus House seeks to end homelessness through four core program areas:
1. SHELTER: Our goal is to reach homeless adults on the street through extensive outreach and to provide a safe environment for those who come through our doors.
2. OUTREACH SERVICES: Columbus House reaches out daily to the most vulnerable population; those with severe mental illness. drug and alcohol addictions; those coming out of prison; those in the early stages of recovery; those who are unable to afford transportation to and from vital health care services, those who have lost family, friends and all hope of ever living a “normal” life again.
3. TRANSITIONAL HOUSING: The primary goal is to facilitate the successful transition of homeless adults into stable and affordable permanent housing while providing them with the skills needed to keep them housed and independent.
4. PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING: The primary goal of Supportive Housing is to provide safe, secure rental units, offering independent living and a permanent residence. It provides flexible and accessible support through on-site case managers.
